Earned Media, Sponsored Articles and Paid Ads: What Each One Does
A clear comparison of earned coverage, sponsored editorial placements and paid ads for companies building long-term visibility and search trust.
Paid ads, sponsored articles and earned coverage are often compared as if they were interchangeable. They are not. Each solves a different problem, and most growth teams use more than one.
Paid ads: speed and control
Search and social ads deliver traffic quickly and can be measured precisely. You control the message and the landing page. Visibility usually stops when spend stops, and ads do not create third-party context about the company.
Earned media: credibility, not control
Earned coverage is written by journalists who decide whether and how to cover the story. It carries the most independent credibility but is not guaranteed and cannot be bought.
Sponsored articles: editorial format, paid placement
A sponsored article is published on a media site in exchange for payment, usually in the outlet’s editorial format and subject to its rules. It sits between the two: you control the topic and timing, the article lives on the outlet’s domain, and it stays online after the campaign.
Sponsored placements should be honest about what they are. Many outlets label them as sponsored or partner content, and in some jurisdictions disclosure is a legal requirement. Search engines also ask that paid links be qualified, for example with rel="sponsored".
How the three work together
- Ads bring people to the site when you need volume now.
- Sponsored articles create searchable third-party pages about the brand in relevant media.
- Earned coverage, when it happens, adds independent validation.
- All three are stronger when the message and the landing page are consistent.
Which to start with
If nobody can find independent information about the company, start with one or two sponsored articles in relevant media so that searchers find context. If the product needs volume now, start with ads and keep the landing page consistent with the articles. Pitch journalists for earned coverage when there is real news: a launch, data, funding or a notable customer.
Measure each channel differently. Ads are measured by conversions, sponsored articles by referral visits, brand searches and the pages that appear for the brand name, and earned coverage by the enquiries and opportunities it creates.
