How to Evaluate a Media Outlet Before Buying a Placement: Traffic, DR and Relevance
A checklist for judging a website before ordering a sponsored article or guest post: audience, traffic estimates, domain rating, indexing and editorial quality.
Catalog metrics help shortlist outlets quickly, but no single number tells you whether a placement will work. Use metrics to narrow the list, then check relevance and editorial quality by hand.
Relevance comes first
An outlet that covers your industry and reaches your market is worth more than a larger site with an unrelated audience. Read a few recent articles: are they written for people like your customers?
Traffic estimates
Monthly traffic figures in catalogs usually come from third-party estimation tools, not from the outlet’s own analytics, unless the outlet connected its analytics and the figure is marked as verified. Estimates from different tools can differ a lot, so compare outlets using the same source and treat the number as a range.
Domain rating and similar scores
Domain Rating (Ahrefs), Domain Authority (Moz) and similar scores estimate the strength of a site’s backlink profile on each tool’s own scale. They are useful for comparing sites, but they are not Google metrics and can be inflated by low-quality links. Look at them together with traffic and relevance.
Indexing and editorial quality
- Search the outlet’s recent articles to check that new pages get indexed.
- Check how many sponsored or unrelated posts appear next to editorial content.
- Look at whether articles have authors, dates and real editing.
- Check that the site works on mobile and loads reasonably fast.
Placement terms
Confirm the format, labelling, link attributes, timing and how long the article stays online. Search engines ask that paid links be qualified with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow"; a placement sold on the promise of passing ranking signal through a paid link conflicts with those policies.
How PRHITS.COM shows metrics
The catalog shows traffic and domain rating only when it has them, with the source or date when available. Missing metrics are hidden rather than estimated, and the final terms of every placement are confirmed before PayPal payment.
